Spaceport 1 is a proposal to build a commercial Sub-orbital vertical launch Spaceport at the site of Scolpaig in North Uist - largely within the National Scenic Area, adjacent to a world renowned RSPB reserve and the closest viewpoint to the dual World Heritage Site of St Kilda.

The original proposal for phase 1 of the plan has been withdrawn and a new proposal for a Suborbital vertical launch Spaceport has been submitted by a consortium of interested parties, including the local council (CnES), Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), QinetiQ, the RHEA Group and Commercial Space Technologies Ltd. (CST) - who have been identified as having military links to Russia.

The purpose of the project is to provide permanent infrastructure for the launch of Sub-orbital sounding or research launch vehicles (rockets). These represent a class of launch vehicle which are capable of operating above the stratosphere but will not enter orbit.
